Catarman is in the heart of the province of Northern Samar. There are at present 55 barangays, 22 of them in the poblacion and considered as the urban areas and the remaining 33 barangays are in rural areas.

The municipality has an area of 46,443 hectares and having a total population of 67,873 as of year 2000. The main occupation is mainly farming with smattering of professionals like doctors, engineers, lawyers, CPAs, nurses, and others.

Agriculture comprises the main activity and source of income for the majority of the people while trading is the main business activity of the town. A small segment engaged in the manufacture and production of hollow blocks, sand and gravel, culverts, pre-fabricated steel and metal sheets, welding, metal crafts and others.
