What to do with your in-country vehicle

A quick guide to selling your motorbike at the end of your assignment

As in Australia there is legal paperwork that needs to be completed when selling a motor vehicle.  I found that most local friends were not quite sure of the process involved, so thought I would write up a few quick pointers – it’s really very easy once you know what to do!!

Once you have agreed on a price with the buyer, you will need to complete a deed of sale.  This is similar to the Australian paperwork, and is where you fill in all the details about the vehicle (model, engine # etc.).  This will all be on your original deed of sale and registration.  I have attached a copy of the form I used, but you can also get a copy from a public notary (ask your workmates).  Make three copies – one for you, one for the buyer, and one for the attorney who signs off on it.

The buyer needs to fill in their personal details, including their CTC number (like a tax file number).  Make sure they know this in advance as it may take them some time to look up their number.  In the place where the seller writes their CTC number, I gave my Australian passport details as some form of ID.

The form then needs to be notarized by an attorney.  Most cities will have a public notary who will do this for a small fee.  For vehicles < P 50,000 the fee is P 500 per vehicle sale.

And that’s it!  Keep a copy for yourself, and give the buyer and notary a copy too.  As far as I can tell there is no stamp duty or other fees involved!
