Unlad Kabayan Migrant Services Foundation, Inc. is a registered non-government, non-profit organisation established in the Philippines in 1996 to address the urgent need for migrant workers to plan and organise their return. The foundation started in Hong Kong in 1994, organising savings associations for a capital build-up to establish income-generating activities in the Philippines.
In the course of mobilising savings, investments and building enerprises, Unlad Kabayan realised the potential for migrant savings to generate jobs and incomes for the unemployed and to support the livelihood of poor farmers and workers in the communities. Unlad Kabayan employs the strategy SEEDS: Social Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development Services. This is a community-based one stop-shop for business development services and busines incubation. The twin approach enables entrepreneurs to acquire knowledge and skills in financial management, marketing an technology to become sustainable and to compete in a dynamis and challenging economic environment. To date, Unlad has been able to help build more than 350 micro and bigger enterprises and strengthen the livelihood of and generate jobs for more than 3500 poor farmers, women, out-of-school youth (OSY), Muslims and Indigenous people (IPs).
