Unang Hakbang Foundation (UHF) is a caring organisation engaged in helping children on the street and in poor urban communities.
UHF has two main programs:Aral Kalinga (AK), a mentoring and tutorial program for in-school children who are on the margin or whose average grade upon entry into the program is 78% and below. The program is intended to help keep the children in school. We do this by enabling them to keep up with schoolwork and, more importantly, by helping raise their aspirations. AK is a support system that seeks to strengthen and affirm the children’s resolve to improve their lives. This School Year 2007/2008, we have 250 children registered in AK. A key component of AK is the development of Munting Titsers or peer tutors. We currently have 27 peer tutors.
Buhay Kalinga, a mentoring program that addresses the needs of street and out-of-school children and youth. We provide street and out-of-school children and youth alternative opportunities for channeling their energies and activities to help them re-gain a sense of their personal worth and navigate a way out of the streets. We have some 20 former street and out-of-school children and youth whose progress we are closely monitoring. They have been enrolled in various non-formal education programs. UHF provides support in terms of tutorials in reading and math, as well as, values and life skills classes. Through a new bakery and cookery project, we are starting an apprenticeship program to help these ageing children obtain good-paying jobs in the restaurant and tourism industry.
